Chapter Seven

Married life had gone well so far. They didn’t really have to transition, they’d done that already. The wheat had been growing as planned, and the weather had cooperated. She’d taken well to Daniel’s schedule for her chores. And except for an occasional swat on the bottom, she’d had no punishment sessions either.

Until today.

That morning, Daniel had left to tend to the fields, and do mending of harnesses and tools in the barn. She had linens to change and wash, in addition to cooking dinner.

There’d been a knock on the door, which in and of itself had been very unusual. She knew she wasn’t supposed answer it. After the incident with Smitty in Topeka, Daniel had discussed with her the importance of being as careful at home as she was in the city. She’d been given specific rules to never open the door if she didn’t know exactly who stood on the other side. This rule made sense to her, because it’d been the same rule that Clive had set for her.

At the sound of the knock, she’d approached the door tentatively. “Who is it?”

“It’s Smitty. I done brought my peddler wagon here. I knows you just got married and thought maybe you’d be needin’ some pots or spices and things. If you open the door, I can show you my things.”

She had needed some spices and had hoped to pick them up in town along with some lotions — which she knew Smitty also had.

She’d responded through the door. “I’m not supposed to open the door, but if you come back later tonight, Daniel and I will buy some of your stuff. Can you come back?”

“Oh. I already saw Daniel, he said it’d be okay for you to talk to me. I’m only gonna stay fer a few minutes. Jes’ long enough to give you what you need.”

It’d seemed odd that Daniel would tell him it would be okay for her to open the door without coming home to be with her. But her husband usually knew best. She’d opened the door and went out to see what Smitty had on his wagon.

She had pulled out lotions, rubbing them into her skin. She’d also picked out a wonderful pot that would be perfect for cooking stews and soups in. Setting it aside, she’d gone back to looking through the array of lotions and perfumes Smitty had laid out for her across the floorboards at the back of his wagon.

What she heard next made her blood turn cold.

“Get your backside in the house. I want it bare and in a corner waiting for me.”

She quickly set the lotions down in the wagon, and without another word, ran into the house. Her bottom had started tingling before she even closed the door.

How could she be in trouble? Smitty had told her it’d be okay.

Could it be that Smitty lied?

She supposed that could be true, but why? She quickly ran to their bedroom, fumbling with the buttons on her skirt. She pulled the skirt down along with her drawers, and stockings.
